Household Debt and Aggregate Consumption Expenditures

چکیده
This paper shows that the debt burden of households, as measured by the debt service to income ratio, is helpful in forecasting the future growth of consumption expenditures. Using data for the United States over the period 1960-97, I find a significant negative relationship between the debt-service ratio of households and future aggregate spending growth. This effect is statistically important for spending on durable goods and services, but not for spending on nondurable goods. Because almost 70 percent of spending on nondurable goods represents purchases of food and clothing (which are relatively nondiscretionary), I conclude that my results are consistent with the view that borrowingconstrained households will limit their discretionary purchases when faced with tightened lending standards following an increase in their debt burden.

U.S. Household Deleveraging: What Do the Aggregate and Household-Level Data Tell Us?
Deleveraging is the process by which households decide that their level of debt is inconsistent with their revised economic outlook and adjust their leverage accordingly, primarily by substituting debt repayment for consumption. Household deleveraging is a commonly cited reason for the sluggish consumption growth experienced during the current economic recovery from the Great Recession. This po...

A distinguishing feature of the period preceding the 2007/08 financial crisis was the sizeable increase in private sector debt observed across many countries. A key component of household liabilities is mortgage debt and with many countries experiencing persistent increases in house prices from the mid-1990s onwards, a marked increase in this aspect of household leverage was observed. While agg...

In this paper we explore the statistical properties of the distributions of consumption expenditures for a large sample of Italian households in the period 1989-2004. Goodness-of-fit tests show that household aggregate (and age-conditioned) consumption distributions are not log-normal. Rather, their logs can be invariably characterized by asymmetric exponential-power densities. Departures from ...

57 As we have seen at the beginning of the Great Recession, the household sector of an economy played a central role in the financial (in)stability that developed after the bust of the housing bubble in the U.S.A. (see e.g. Acharya et al., 2009; Claessens et al., 2010). Debelle (2004) had already pointed out that it is the distribution of debt that needs to be analyzed to investigate the effect...
متن کاملAnticipated Changes in Household Debt and Consumption
This paper evaluates how anticipated changes in household debt associated with the leveraged purchase of housing a ects consumption. I build a heterogeneous agent model, calibrated to match the distribution of income and wealth within the US economy, in which households are subject to uninsurable income shocks and can save in both liquid and illiquid assets. I show that the marginal propensity ...
